How to Change a Cloth Diaper

1. Have clean diaper, water, and wipe on hand.

2. Open the wet diaper. If it is soiled, use the diaper to wipe as much of the feces as possible off baby’s skin. Use toilet paper also. Wipe girls from front to back to avoid vaginal infection.

3. Remove the diaper. If it was soiled, place a change pad under baby so you can wash his bottom. Use clean warm water to wet the baby wipe. Fold the cloth over and use a clean section for each wipe. Do not use soap as it will dry the skin. You may need more than one cloth wipe to do the job--put only CLEAN wipes into your water if you are using a basin. (Smart Tip: Use a thermos to keep hot, wet cloth wipes near your change area.)

4. Dry baby’s skin and put on a clean diaper.

5. Wet diapers go directly into the diaper pail. If you have used a disposable liner, flush or put it in the garbage. If you are using cloth liners, rinse the liner. Soiled diapers will need to be rinsed in the toilet if you have not used diaper liners. Use rubber gloves which you keep in a container near the toilet especially for the purpose, or use a diaper sprayer (sprayer that attaches to the toilet water line).

Note: Water is NOT needed in your diaper pail! Just put the diapers through the rinse cycle in your automatic washer before you wash them. This will do a BETTER job at getting them clean, and will lengthen the life of the fabric in your diapers.
